The Department of English maintains a healthy balance between the academic curriculum and an array of activities. It offers an Honours course in English, English discipline as an elective course in B.A. Programme and also various inter-disciplinary courses to other disciplines. The English (Hons) course being taught in Delhi University has opened up the canon to include new areas of studies, making it an exciting inter-disciplinary field. This course is suitable for students with an aptitude for literature and writing, or those who have an interest in media or journalism. The curriculum comprises English Literature written not only in England but also in India, Africa, the West Indies and Canada and includes works translated from other languages. The department also offers various Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) like Creative Writing, Translation Studies and Soft Skills.
These papers equip students with skills required for media and academic writing, understanding nuances of literatures, familiarizing with writing and performance, understanding the relationship between literature and cinema, exploring perspectives through travelogue writing, professional translator/interpreter, to name a few. The department Newsletter ‘White Noise’, encourages students to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus and engage with thought-provoking issues and discussions. Epistle, the English Literary Sociey organises many activities throughout the year. Its annual department day titled 'LitLuminous' invites experts and eminent personalities to interact with students and introduces them to diverse areas of research. The day also invites student researchers to present their papers as well as witnesses many acticities around the chosen theme of the year. LitLuminous also hosts an art exhibition where department students exhibit their skills.
The English Department has produced successful alumnae like Priya Goswami, Independent Filmmaker and recipient of 60th National Film Award for her film ‘ A Pinch of Skin’ and Madhavi Gandhi, Co-founder of Happy Hands Foundation, Delhi, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the revival and upkeep of the country’s indigenous art and craft.
