The Department of English maintains a healthy balance between the academic curriculum and an array of activities. The Department offers core course ranging from Indian and European classical literatures, women’s writing to Indian, British, American, European and postcolonial literatures. Discipline centric elective course offers the Indian diaspora, science fiction and detective literature, literature and cinema, travel writing and British literature: post World War II and world literature. Generic elective, skill-based ability enhancement elective and compulsory English papers are taught to students of English discipline, programme course and honors course of other disciplines.
The papers equip the students with skills required for media and academic writing, understanding nuances of literatures, familiarizing with writing and performance, understanding the relationship between literature and cinema, exploring perspectives through travelogue writing, professional translator/interpreter, to name a few. The department Newsletter ‘White Noise’, a blog, engages students with thought provoking issues and discussions. The literary Society LitLuminousorganizes talks, conferences and activities throughout the year.
The Department has produced successful alumnae like PriyaGoswami, Independent Filmmaker and recipient of 60th National Film Award for her film ‘ A Pinch of Skin’ and Madhavi Gandhi, Co-founder of Happy Hands Foundation, Delhi, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the revival and upkeep of the country’s indigenous art and craft.
