Asar, the Entrepreneurship Society of Kamala Nehru College works towards the upliftment of socially disadvantaged groups by creating sustainable projects, which fosters entrepreneurial skills within the community and among the students. The society is led by determined and headstrong students and thrives on its unwavering belief in sensitivity, equality, determination, and invention, which nurtures ideas and entrepreneurial action.
The most important chapter of e-cell is ‘Enactus’ which is an international non-profit organization which brings together students from universities across the world to take up social outreach projects for the benefits of underprivileged communities.
Three initiatives have been successfully launched by the society so far: Project Kadam, Project Dilaab, and most recently, Project Beesafe. The Project Kadam was launched in 2017 with the aim to tackle the problems faced by the cobbler community for generations. The society worked with recycled denim and fabric wastes which were acquired through donation drives, to make upcycled footwear and pouches.
Project Dilaab was launched in 2021. The pandemic did not deter the determined young entrepreneurs and the project was a success. The project worked with a community of students with disabilities to make scented candles that were sold in ceramic pots therefore supporting the local porter community as well. The project impacted the lives of 54 people and sold 65+ candles.
The Project Beesafe is Asar's recent venture. The project aims to make environmentally safe alternatives from beeswax by working with students with disabilities and the tribal community. The project aims to put a foot forward in the path to sustainability by creating beeswax tablets and beeswax wraps which are an eco-friendly alternative to naphthalene balls and aluminum foil/plastic cling wraps respectively.
Project Beesafe Launch:
Project Beesafe was launched under the guidance of esteemed Principal Professor
Bhakuni in September 2022. The project envisions providing sustainable alternatives
to toxic and non-recyclable products used in our day to day lives. We launched
beeswax wraps as a sustainable alternative to aluminium foil and scented tablets as
a sustainable alternative to naphthalene balls. The project seeks to widen the
product categories in the coming months.
Every project taken up by Asar seeks to uplift a marginalized section of society by assisting them in taking up entrepreneurial initiatives. The team worked with the Muskaan NGO located in Vasant Kunj, which works towards providing opportunities for capacity development to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Students at Asar were involved in training them through continuous visits teaching them the skills to successfully produce these products which were never taken up by them earlier and thus required skill development. The journey was holistic and fulfilling, lending the much needed impact Asar hopes to create. This project idea was presented in the Enactus National competition held in July, 2022 under the ideation stage projects and received appreciation as an innovative and futuristic endeavour with sustainability as the primary goal.
Project Kadam
With the reopening of colleges after the Covid-19 lockdown, Project Kadam was
resumed. This project required continuous contact with the cobbler community and
students of Asar were determined to bring back livelihood to this section of society
which suffered tremendously during the lockdown. Various denim donation drives
were organised in the college and those denims were upcycled into beautiful and
comfortable footwear. This project received excellent response as the product story
was beautifully presented. The “Happiness Station” in college served as a successful
point of contact with the students. From time to time a display and sale of products
made by various societies of college is undertaken there and Project Kadam was the
highlight. Scraps left from denims were converted into pouches providing
employment and revenue to small tailors in the area of Lajpat Nagar in Delhi.
Other events / activities
Apart from having an online marketplace, our team has made efforts to capitalise on
offline events and fests to spread awareness of our cause. We displayed through
stalls at various Diwali Melas and Winter Carnivals. All efforts to upscale the project
was taken and we have been in talks with Amazon Saheli which is a segment of
Amazon catering to environmentally conscious products like ours which also serve
as a platform for upliftment of the marginalised.
#BringChangewithEntrepreneurship was an initiative to help students learn more about Entrepreneurship through webinars and workshops conducted by industry leaders. One such webinar “Green Entrepreneurship: drive for change” was presented by Mr Ajay Kumar (Social Entrepreneur, Founder, and Director - TeachforGreen) on 30th march 2022.
