The Department of Geography offers Honours course in Geography, elective discipline in Programme course as well as generic elective papers for other honours courses. The department comprises of twelve teaching faculty members, specializing in different subfields of geography, three supporting staff including one cartographer, and about 150 students coming from diverse socio-economic and geographical backgrounds. The syllabus includes many sub disciplines related to two main branches of geography: Physical Geography and Human Geography. Besides this, the practical courses that impart training and skills of map-making, field survey, and research, also form an important part of the syllabus. The classroom teaching is sufficiently supplemented by the invited lectures, workshops, seminars, and field excursions. Every year the department observes Geographika, an event that is marked with both academic and cultural fervor. A departmental magazine is also published annually with the aim to hone the research and writing skills of the students. The discipline of geography develops analytical and integrating skills, as a result of which many of our students are working in the research organizations like Council for Social Research, All India Institute of Local Self Government, and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Besides going in for traditional fields of academics and teaching, there are umpteen opportunities to make a career in technological fields of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems. Our students are placed in organizations like Apple India Ltd, Geospatial Media and Communication Pvt. Ltd., and HERE Location Technologies. Urban and regional planning, environmental planning, and tourism are some of the other fields in which the students of the department have made their careers.
