Sociology as a discipline is a scientific study of interactions between society and individuals, focusing on the social interactions and the patterns that emerge out of these interactions. It studies everything from the analysis of short contacts between anonymous individuals on the street to global social processes. It focuses primarily on the influence of social relationships upon people’s attitudes and behavior and on how societies are established and change. As individuals are products of social environment, the discipline of sociology makes a positive contribution to the overall development of students. Sociology is an accumulative effort of research and theoretical paradigms of the subject that brings a connection between classroom teaching and day-to-day experiences. The Department of Sociology at Kamala Nehru College is a young, dynamic department which believes in all-round development of its students. Hence along with academic lectures the department tries to engage its students to look beyond the classroom discussions. To ensure all round development of its students, the department conducts conferences, seminars, book club discussions, presentations, field trips and excursions. It encourages students to present their viewpoints and enhance their writing skills through the annual department newsletter. We foster the development of creativity, innovation, critical thinking, analytic problem solving and communication skills of students. We make them aware about the scope of sociology by offering huge employment opportunities in the fields of law, social work, education, human resource development, public policy, mass communications, public health, non-profit organization, and international affairs.
