Solid waste mixed with liquid waste damages the soil, ground water and surrounding habitat. The most important reason for waste collection is the protection of the environment and the general health of people. Waste can cause air and water pollution resulting into water-borne diseases and breathing problems in living organisms. With the aim of maintaining cleanliness on campus, ensuring good health and conserving natural resources, Kamala Nehru College initiated the waste management program in the year 2005 in association with MIECOFT under the aegis of Green Beans Society.
Late Dr. Roopa Bajpayee (Department of English) and Dr. Amita Singh (now Professor at Centre for Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University) along with Dr. Minoti Chatterjee (Principal 2004-15) took interest in spearheading the process. The aim of the project was to convert the biodegradable waste generated in college into manure through the composting mechanism.
Since 2017, waste-management is being handled by faculty member of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Sanjay Marale and Dr. Hari Ram Prajapati (Department of Economics) under the guidance of Dr. Kalpana Bhakuni (Officiating Principal since 2017). During this phase, the efforts have been made to complete the process of—removal of debris from college dump yard by JCB machine, pit making, replacing the compost machines from dump yard to open space, segregation of waste by manpower, leveling the soil spread on ground and cleaning of the dump yard and surrounding area.
To ensure that the waste management as a process is consistently maintained, the residents on campus arrange their waste disposal separately and the canteen management ensures that waste from the canteen is taken care of properly. The green waste is dumped in the compost pit with proper segregation i.e. removal of plastic, wood, stones etc. The team plans to effectively implement and maintain the ongoing project of waste management by more participation of students so that there is greater understanding of cleanliness, health and environment.
