Environment Science is an Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC) with four credits under Choice Based Credit System of graduation. It is a compulsory module for one semester for all the undergraduate courses in the first year of curriculum since the academic session of 2014-15.
The aim of this programme is not only to introduce the concepts of environment in theory to students, but also to develop an understanding which is oriented towards the practical implications of our activities on the environment. For e.g. knowledge of the public distribution system of resources like water, power generation and waste management system make students environmentally responsible.
The course is taught in both English and Hindi. Students from diverse fields, be it from psychology, history, sociology, geography or Hindi actively participate in the discussions about the current topics on environment. Discussions on current policies of government on environment help students develop an insight about ground level operations. The assignments or project work submitted by students involves analysis of real-world environmental case studies such as natural disasters (Uttarakhand floods, Hud-hud cyclone, etc.), environmental movements (Bishnois of Rajasthan, Chipko movement etc.), environmental pollution (air, water, soil, e-waste, etc.) and environmental conservation (national parks, biosphere reserves, rain water harvesting, etc.). The college library has arranged immense collection of books/journals/magazines on environment and relevant topics in a very short time after the introduction of this course in August 2014.
The students and faculty members of Enviornment Science work in close association with the Environment club of College-The Green Beans society. Since 2017-18, we have been involved in activities like Solid Waste management and Rain Water Harvesting System management on College campus. With the help of faculty and student members of the Green Beans society, a botanical audit of the College campus has been initiated. We wish to continue with such environment friendly projects and follow many more innovative ideas towards sustainable environmental solutions.
